Austin Habitat for Humanity helps underprivileged

Recently the members of the Lake Travis UMC participated in the Habitat for Humanity build in East Austin for a mother of five who was living in her 17-year-old daughter’s one-bedroom apartment.
The church’s participation was chaired by Steve Cooper. Members raised more than $6,000 to help pay for the home construction and organized a work crew of 25 men and women. People served a meal to the work crew.
The Rev. Andy Smith, his wife Robin, and the Bee Caves Police Chief Rusty Pancoast and his wife, Sangrid, were part of the work crew.
The crew had a great sense of accomplishment from helping someone else, members said. Work crews will be invited back to the dedication of the home.
During this time of foreclosures, the Austin Habitat for Humanity is providing affordable housing for many people. To qualify for a home, you must be willing to:
> Provide Austin Habitat for Humanity with a minimal down payment.
> Be honest and cooperative with Austin Habitat for Humanity.
> Fulfill a minimum of 400 “sweat equity” hours (total number of hours depends on family size).
> Attend 24 required homebuyer education classes.
> Promptly make house payments.
> Maintain and repair the house after moving in.
